The PCSK9 inhibitor phenomenon

The work of Professor Jennifer Robinson (University of Iowa, USA) and her colleagues as part of the ODYSSEY trial has been pivotal in demonstrating the effectiveness of the PCSK9 inhibitor, alirocumab. Her lecture was timely given the recent National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommendations (TA393) regarding the use of alirocumab in primary hypercholesterolaemia and mixed dyslipidaemia.1

Pre-op statins improve heart surgery outcome

Pre-operative statin therapy can reduce the chance of post-operative atrial fibrillation (AF) and shortens hospital stays in patients who undergo cardiac surgery, according to a review1 published recently by Cochrane researchers. However, statin pre-treatment had no influence on the risk of dying, stroke, heart attack or kidney failure around the time of the operation.

Internet sites selling prescription statins directly to consumers are widespread, and most contain very poor levels of information relevant to safe use of the medicine and side effects, according to a study1 published recently in the journal Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety.
