The British Red Cross has launched a free first aid app, advising smartphone users on how to act in an emergency. The app features advice on 18 everyday first aid scenarios, including cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Defibrillators are to be donated to 24 UK schools as part of the Hand On Heart campaign – a collaboration between an online supplier of the devices and three firms linked to the industry.

Fewer than a third of people understand when situations do not require emergency services, according to research published online in the Emergency Medicine Journal.(1)
