Chair of NICE talks about new AF guidelines

Doctors are not always keeping step with prescribing new technologies and medicines, or adopting new ways of talking to patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), according to a BJC editorial on new AF guidance from Dr David Haslam, Chair of NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

Speaking in the British Journal of Cardiology, Dr Haslam says that today’s patient – the “e-patient” – is equipped, enabled, empowered, engaged or even electronic, making them much more knowledgeable than in the past and keen to be involved in discussions about their treatment. He points out that many patients are not always appropriately anticoagulated.
