AFA Infographic for greater awareness of AF and stroke

The Atrial Fibrillation Association (AFA) has launched an atrial fibrillation (AF) Infographic, to raise awareness of AF and stroke, and make them a national priority.

This interactive infographic allows users to understand AF and stroke prevention at a national and local level. It displays information and statistics on AF including:

  • Prevalence of AF
  • Diagnosis of AF
  • Treatment rates of AF
  • Potentially avoidable AF related stokes
  • Potential cost savings resulting from avoiding AF related strokes.

It also allows users to compare information for each nation, and drill down for local statistics. Another option compares AF statistics for any two UK regions or nations.

CEO of the AF Association, Trudie Lobban MBE addressed MPs at the launch: “AF related strokes are more debilitating and more likely to be fatal. The AF Infographic reveals that 5,644 of these strokes could be prevented if patients were receiving adequate treatment.”

“Anticoagulation in AF is crucial to reduce risk of stroke. Approximately 848,000 people should be anticoagulated but over half of these (466,476) are not, resulting in preventable disabilities, deaths and lifelong impacts on families,” she added.

Professor of Clinical Cardiology and AF Association Trustee, John Camm, emphasises the need for greater awareness and understanding: “Anticoagulation therapy has undergone clinical testing and proven to effectively reduce stroke risk in people with AF. Unfortunately, there is lack of understanding about AF and the role of anticoagulants in the medical, public and policy environments. The AF Infographic clearly demonstrates the difference that can be made to individuals, their families and the NHS budget if appropriate treatment is offered to relevant people,” he said.

Glyn Davies MP, a sufferer of AF, opened the launch of the Infographic. He has worked with the AF Association to campaign for greater awareness of the heart condition and for the government to address this in national health policy.
