Cardiology master class for London GPs

Coronary heart disease has been highlighted at the GP Cardiology Conference 2012, an educational event held recently at BMI Healthcare’s London Independent Hospital, attended by more than 260 GPs.

Delegates were provided with interactive sessions tailored to primary care. Over the course of the day the cardiologists and delegates covered common topics that GP’s encounter in practice, including:

  • who and how to treat patients,
  • heart failure,
  • hypertension,
  • angina.

Consultants also gave insight into new procedures available at BMI The London Independent Hospital including:

  • renal denervation,
  • transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI),
  • hole closures,
  • atrial fibrillation (AF) ablations.

“GPs are at the front line of the management of heart disease in the UK,” commented Dr Charles Knight, Consultant Cardiologist at the London Independent Hospital. “GPs are expected to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, optimise cardiovascular risk management and know what situations require onward referral to cardiologists in secondary care”.

“The role of the GP in cardiovascular disease is so central and important that sharing knowledge and building relationships between specialists and GPs is vital if we are going to be able to improve patient care and outcomes. This is why this, now annual, event organised by BMI The London Independent Hospital, is so vital for both GPs and my cardiologist colleagues,” Dr Knight concluded.

Speaking on the success of the event Kirsty Baker, Executive Director at BMI The London Independent Hospital, commented, “Even after the success of last year’s event we were completely overwhelmed at the response received from GPs wanting to attend this event. Delivering a master class driven through feedback from GP and practices across London we hope that this educational conference was again mutually beneficial to everyone who attended. We were delighted that so many GPs were interested in attending and would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the day such a success”.
